The CTIA, also known as Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, “is an international nonprofit membership organization that has represented the wireless communications industry since 1984. Membership in the association includes wireless carriers and their suppliers, as well as providers and manufacturers of wireless data services and products” according to their website.
In addition, the CTIA is focused on getting consumers information regarding wireless technology and letting them know of the options available to them. They also have a green program and encourage people to recycle or reuse their mobile devices. They also advocate for people with disabilities to ensure equal access to mobile technology. Other programs the CTIA is involved in is text4 baby, AMBER alerts, and keeping teenagers from using cell phones while driving.
Recently the CTIA also came up with important steps to reduce data loss and theft of Smartphones. According to a recent press release, the four steps include “Implement databases to prevent reactivation, Notify consumers of features to secure/lock phones with passwords, Educate consumers about features to secure/lock passwords, Educate consumers about applications to remotely lock/locate/erase data, and Educate consumers about smartphone theft, protections and preventative measures.”
On the website people can join the organization as a member. Prior to doing that, a membership brochure can be downloaded highlighting some of the benefits of joining. A few of those benefits include representation in government policy, access to networking groups in the industry, discounts on data to help expand businesses, discounts on exhibit areas, and access to areas of the website intended only for members.
The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association is very active in promoting the responsible and widespread use of mobile technologies in the modern world. Steve Largent, the President and CEO, states that they are committed to helping their members advance in the wireless industry.
