Everything You Need to Know About the Wireless Foundation

The Wireless Foundation: Their Goals and Mission

The Wireless Foundation is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1991. The organization is focused on using wireless technology safely and responsibly, educating people, promoting “green cell phone practices” and keeping the community health with mobile technology. They have many important educational programs available to the public.

Educational and Green Programs

The Wireless Citizenship program is one of the top educational programs offered by The Wireless Foundation. According to the organization, “These programs help educate students about responsible behaviors in cell phone use. We provide resources that encourage educators and families to encourage young people to practice proper cell phone etiquette and safety behaviors. Our wireless citizenship programs also seek to serve as a catalyst for discussions at home about daily use of wireless technology.” The statistics of this program’s outreach is shocking. The organization states that they have been able to help over 60 million teachers and families.

The Wireless Foundation also has a campaign that they call “Be Smart Be Safe Be Fair.” This is closely tied to the Wireless Citizenship program. It helps to teach teenagers about not using their cell phones while attempting to operate a vehicle. It also offers information to people about recycling cell phones when you have finished using them. This helps to keep cell phone garbage out of landfills. In addition, they teach families about various functions and filters available for cell phone usage, and foster parent-child agreements for responsible use. There are lesson plans available for teachers, and information for government policymakers regarding wireless technology.

How Does the Wireless Foundation Keep the Community Safe?

One of the most vital functions of the organization that helps protect our communities is the foundation’s involvement in assistance with AMBER alerts for missing children. They also have a program called text4baby. According to Ben Burkhardt with the organization, “The text4baby tips and messages – developed in collaboration with government and nonprofit health experts – focus on several topics including, nutrition, immunization, and birth defects prevention.” People can text “BABY” to the program to recieve helpful tips.
